Sharon Sexton - Artist Statement PDF Print E-mail

I’ve been an artist most of my life, although it has taken years to be able to say this. As a child I grew up in Florida, I have always loved the tropical environment. My father was an interior designer and painted beautiful murals in our home. I loved playing with the painted fabric samples and looking at the wall paper samples and design magazines, my favorite part was the garden section; I still love gardening and painting.

As a self taught painter I’ve gone full circle and realize I was born with the most important things I need to know about my art. Most of all I have learned to trust my intuition, painting and making art about the natural world that I love, full of animals and exotic tropical plants. The paintings are always places that I wish I could step into. Every painting has a heartbeat, some living creature, large or small all equally important.

In 1989 I studied clay with Glenda Taylor and shortly after we began Tiger Lily Studio, in 2000. I was commissioned to design and make my first public art for the City of Vero Beach, Florida. Nearly 1000 handmade terracotta clay tiles assembled on four, ten foot columns creating four distinct natural areas; Ocean , Indian River , Wetlands , Hammock.

I live with my husband Sean Sexton on Treasure Hammock Ranch, in Vero Beach, Florida. I have 2 children and too many animals.
