A work of art has a life of its own. I am drawn to the idea of a certain order developing from seemingly random materials. I have always been fascinated with discarded objects of all kinds.
Because my assemblages are constructed almost entirely from found materials, all of my work is collaborative. A whole community of people conspires with me either consciously, by gifts of specific materials, or unwittingly simply by leaving yard waste or lumber at the side of the road or by tearing off an old roof. Dumpsters, construction sites and backyards are fertile ground. Chance determines what materials I find and when I find them. These materials already have a rich history and I like to think about their former life before man or nature has discarded them. My task becomes uncovering or enhancing the beauty that is already there.
To me, the process of making art is everything. I work spontaneously and instinctively and the piece appears during the act of making it. My work comes from the place I am in that moment. Additionally, my studio environment has proven to be a significant influence on my work. Dialogue and interaction with the other artists in our shared space provides valuable, alternate perspectives on my work.
